Seattle Sync Problems

First let me start off by saying I'm in the University District of Seattle Zip: 98105. My Gateway is 12.228.72.1. I'd appreciate any emails if others are experiencing problems in this area or if I am isolated problem.

The problem: Usually only during peak times (6pm-11pm) my modem will loose sync for about 1 minute then reconnect this is repeated every 15 minutes or so. Sometimes it's good for about an hour other times the modem looses sync 5 times repeatedly. While the modem has lost its sync my pings time out and I loose connectivity.

Background: I have a home network with multiple computers running over a Router. The problem occurs with or without the router. I see no difference between line noise during the good periods and the bad periods. Friends in the area continue to experience the exact same problem so I don't believe that it is just me.

Tech Support: I've spent numerous hours on the phone with ATT and this problem was occurring before the switch and continues to happen. I've had my line noise tested, my modem replaced, and the cable connectors replaced. I've had too many tickets and Tier1, and Tier2 service calls to remember.

Thoughts: From what I have read I think I may be on an overloaded node which would explain drops only during peak times. This was further confirmed during the past holiday season when the University closes down and everyone in the area leaves for home. Network performance was fantastic (200ms)

Any sort of resolution or information would be helpful. I've attached a traceroute showing where the bottleneck is (2nd hop, I believe that is my gateway). I'd also appreciate some methods of making ATT tech support understand my problem.

Im in your area too. I had that problem a few months back. took about 3 months for them to fix.
the line tech finally came and told me that it was a problem with their equipment outside. maybe that's what's happening with your node.

I am in the central Michigan area, and I have been having that problem for about the past 3 months. I haven't been able to get them to understand it, but I would be interested if anybody else figures it out. We almost had them convinced to reimburse us, but then it all got shot to hell when @home died....

Question - On any of your many Tech support calls did they ask you to go to a web page to register your modem? The Registration web sites are different for each area....
sas.r_.attbi.com Seattle is region 1 so the registration page is »sas.r1.attbi.com if you successfully get to registration page it will ask for your account number and registration code (the registration code is the last nine (9) digits of your account number. This registration page registers you modem's MAC Address. This could possible be the reason for losing connectivity. So the next time that you call tech support you might want to ask them if your modem needs to be registered.

To Agent_ATT
I haven't been asked to register before on the sas.r1 address. When I go to it though it says I'm subscribed to the Service.

To FIFE
I'm not really sure what call center your refering too. I just call the regular 1-800 number.

Is there anything I can do about my problem?

hey bobtuwill maybe this might help. try calling the tech support during the peak hours(they are open 24/7) and make sure you tell the tech that this happens every night i know it is a pain to have to go through all the steps they insist you do but it is faster just to do it so they can do the job they have and then with the speeds you are getting something should be done .call wait time is alot less at night than it is during the day too. dont forget to save your tracerts and ping statistics so that you can email them to the tech too. good luck

I also live in the UW district. I have had the same pathetic first hop latency that you speak of. I think they are saturating the node with users and the CMTS ports must all be full. My previous employer (brand-new 870MHz plant)had a first hop latency of 8-9 ms all the time. We were able to achieve this low latency even at peak usage periods because we limited the # of connections per node to 150-200. Our CMTS never used all of the 1500 ports.

A little background: a node using quadrature amplitude modulation 256 for downstream can push 37 Mbits/s down and 10 Mbit/s up per 6 MHz channel band. If more than 250 connections are used per node then node saturation will be a problem during peak usage.

Conclusion:
Attbi has the worst first-hop latency I have ever seen for a broadband provider. I do not forsee any improvements in the near future.

Thanks for the info CMTech. You've confirmed what I've believed for the last 2 months.

My question now is how in the world do I convince ATT that their node is saturated. I know they've recieved calls from the people in my area. But if the people in my area are like me they have had multiple tickets that have been closed instead of left open even though the problem has yet to be solved.

Are any ATT-Technicians or Engineers reading this post? Do you have any ability to enact any sort of fix?

I've been having this problem in Yakima with Charter, they eventualy had to replace a bunch of line outside of my house, and its been a little better since. Don't know if that helps at all.

It's not too hard to convince ATTBI tech support if you have the documentation to back it up. Traceroutes such as displayed above will let them know where the problem is and help guide them to fix it. But you have to call in and give them the information and have them send up a trouble ticket.

I had the ATT Technician come out and check my line noise and connectors. He said everything was fine and his supervisor told him that it was a known problem at the "headend". I just finished getting of the phone with Tier 1 and they told me that there was work going on in my area but he didn't know if it was related to my problem. So I'll call back next week if it doesn't get fixed. Hopefully all will be well. I'm averaging 238ms right now to a local server in Seattle. Other peole farter north that I know get 30ms. Oh well here's hoping.

At least I'll be getting a 3 month credit Seattle Sync Problems - AT&T Broadband (10)

OMG!
I live in your zip code and I have been having the smae exact problems! My IP is 12.228.182.177 and this problem has been happening since two months before the AT&T implosion. AT&T told me I was the only person reporting problems in this area so I felt it might be a hardware problem but it was not.

The line techs told me to that is was an equipment problem outside of my house and that they were working on it. That was over 4 months ago. I have been told routers/nodes/line noise and load balancing. This is especially frustrating since I am a beginner with networks.

Just glad to hear someone else in my area is having this problem.
